Chris Deferio
- Lead Barista
Chris grew up in Syracuse, got into coffee while in Bible college and has been in the industry ever since. Chris has worked in many different shops as a barista, trainer and manager. He has been involved in barista competitions for a good portion of his career being a finalist in several and winning several. (4th place United states Barista Championship 2007, 3 time Coffee Fest Latte art Champion) He moved back to Syracuse to work with Matt at Cafe Kubal, and it has been a great decisions he has made in his coffee career. Chris is in charge of barista training at Cafe Kubal to ensure the quality of each drink. He lives in Eastwood with his wife, Lynnsy (who designed the interior for University Cafe) Favorite Kubal beverage is either an espresso or a Chemex brewed Kenyan. Peter Pullen

Peter grew up in Pennsylvania. The cafe environment has always been a part of his life, starting at the dinner table where his family shared tea, coffee, and conversations with people from around the globe. He received a professional degree of architecture from Syracuse University in 2011 and found that working at a local coffee company was a great opportunity to pursue his interests in design, illustration, and particularly coffee. If he’s not at work, he’s somewhere in the city sketching or reading a book. Favorite Kubal beverage: Kenyan Pour-Over (Sumatra if he’s being philosophical) or a 12oz latte. Christina Trout
- Media Manager
Christina grew up in Taipei, a city that has a cafe on almost every street corner. She relocated to Syracuse where she received her MFA in Video Art at SU. In the Fall of 2011, Christina met with Matt Godard who offered her a wonderful opportunity to learn about coffee industry. Christina is in charge of Cafe Kubal’s print media, retail design, on-line presentation as well as social media marketing. Besides all the fun projects at Cafe Kubal, Christina designs wedding/party invitations on the side. Her favorite cafe drink is a pour-over in the morning or a cappuccino in the afternoon. Dan Hamon

Born in Montana and raised in Indiana, Dan made his way to Central New York after meeting his wife, a Syracuse native. Although he always had a taste for fine food, he found his passion and love for culinary art after marrying into an Italian family. Dan enjoys making food that can be shared among friends and family members. As Café Kubal’s head chef, Dan adds to each customer’s experience as they enjoy our superbly roasted coffee and handcrafted espresso drinks. Becky Benedict

Becky has lived in Syracuse all of her life and grew up around family that seemed to always be drinking coffee. However, it wasn’t until she joined the Cafe Kubal team in May 2011 that she learned to have a true appreciation and love for the beverage. Becky has a bachelors degree in Illustration from Syracuse University. Outside of managing the cafe, Becky likes to spend time with her family and friends and attempting to create things through writing, illustrating, and knitting. Ian Dickerson
- SU Cafe Manager
Born and raised in sunny Southern California, Ian decided that he needed a change of scenery so he came to Syracuse University where he graduated with a degree in Communication and Rhetorical Studies. While taking a marketing course at SU, Ian learned a lot about the coffee industry and became hooked on Cafe Kubal’s high quality coffee and coffee culture along the way. As SU cafe manager, Ian is in charge of the finances and on campus marketing. When Ian is not managing the cafe, you can find him out with his dog Brooklyn or long boarding with friends. Racquel Luciano
- SU Cafe Shift Manager
Racquel grew up in Westchester and recently moved to Syracuse after graduating from SUNY Plattsburgh with a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. She started working for Cafe Kubal since the opening of the SU cafe. Although she had never been a huge fan of coffee in general, she soon fell in love with Kubal’s delicious beverages. When she’s not busy at work, she likes to spend time with friends and family and enjoy travelling to new places and trying new things. Her favorite Kubal drink is the 12 oz. vanilla latte.
