How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Coffee at Home

How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Coffee at Home

At Café Kubal, we believe great coffee starts with great habits. Whether you're just getting into brewing or want to level up your daily ritual, this guide will help you extract the best flavor from every bean.

What You Need to Brew Like a Pro

Before you start, gather your tools:

  • Fresh whole bean coffee (from Café Kubal)

  • A burr grinder (for consistent grind size)

  • A digital scale (for accuracy)

  • Filtered water

  • A kettle (gooseneck if available)

  • Your brewing device: French press, pour-over, drip machine, AeroPress, etc.

The Golden Ratio for Coffee

A good starting point is 1 gram of coffee per 16 grams of water.

Quick Example:

  • 20g coffee → 320g water (approx. 11oz)

No scale? Aim for 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6oz of water.

Recommended Brew Times

Different methods need different brew times:

  • Pour-over: 2.5–3.5 minutes

  • French press: 4 minutes before plunging

  • Drip machine: 4–5 minutes

  • AeroPress: 1.5–2 minutes

  • Cold brew: 12–24 hours in the fridge

Water Quality Makes a Difference

Since coffee is 98% water, the water you use matters.

  • Use filtered water heated to 195–205°F

  • Avoid reboiling or using leftover water

Choose the Right Grind Size

Each brewing method needs a different grind:

  • Coarse (sea salt): French press, cold brew

  • Medium-coarse: Chemex

  • Medium (sand-like): Drip brewers

  • Medium-fine: AeroPress

  • Fine (table salt): Espresso

Tip: Always grind right before brewing for the freshest taste.

Pro Tips for Better Brews

  • Pre-wet your filters to avoid paper taste

  • Rinse your gear regularly

  • Tweak grind size or water temp if your brew tastes off
